CPV Moving Ahead with 762 MW Smyth County, VA Power Plant

Competitive Power Ventures (CPV) is moving forward with its plans for a 762 MW combined cycle facility in Smyth County, VA and expects a 30-36 month construction schedule. On Thursday, November 15, the county’s planning commission and board of supervisors will conduct a joint public hearing on CPV’s request for a Special Use Permit. The idea of building a natural gas-fired electricity generation plant in Smyth County isn’t new to CPV. In April 2001, the company proposed building a plant fueled by natural gas in Broadford.

A company that optioned a 108-acre site in Atkins last fall for a natural gas-fired electricity generation plant is moving forward with its plans for the 762-megawatt combined-cycle facility.

On Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. the county’s planning commission and board of supervisors will conduct a joint public hearing on Competitive Power Ventures’ (CPV) request for a Special Use Permit.

First, however, CPV wants to communicate with area residents about its plans. Gener Gotiangco, a CPV vice president, said in a recent interview, “It’s our intent to reach out to the community.”

To do so, CPV hosted an informational open house Thursday, November 8, from aAtkinsElementary School. According to Sally Morgan,SmythCounty’s community and economic developer, CPV mailed invitations to more than 100 residences and businesses in the immediate area of the proposed plant and has also posted flyers in Atkins.

Gotiangco said CPV wanted to walk the community through environmental, engineering and construction issues and address any citizen concerns.

Other notes

The original project back in 2001 was planning to use air cooled condensers
