Alberici JV Working on Canadian $67 Mln Carbon-capture Project

An Alberici joint venture was chosen to install a steam turbine at a western Canada power plant -- part of a larger project to capture carbon dioxide emissions at the plant.

The venture between Alberici Western Constructors and Balzer’s Canada Inc., a Canadian industrial contractor, will perform the work at electricity provider SaskPower’s Boundary Dam Power Station.

The Boundary Dam project in Saskatchewan is considered the first commercial-scale effort to capture and sequester carbon dioxide emissions at a coal-fired power plant, according to Alberici. One million metric tons of CO2 will be captured and stored in a deep saline reservoir or used for oil recovery.

Work being done by the Alberici unit involves replacement of a 160-megawatt steam turbine. The contract is valued at $67 million.
