• Importance of media vs. installation:

John McKenna made a recent presentation in a McIlvaine webinar showing the greater efficiency of membrane bags over non wovens without the film. However in the discussion it was made clear that most of the emissions come from factors not related to the basic filtration capability. There can be leakage at the seams. there can be leakage at the point of bag detachment. Damage to bags during installation is another problem. Jim Griffin of Donaldson developed a 12 x 12 miniature filter which can be run in parallel to the operating system using the same bag material. the difference in performance is then a function of these other factors.

• AFS oil and gas conference slated for March in Houston

AFS will host the Oil & Gas and Chemical Processing Filtration and Separations Conference March 24-26th at the Houston Marriott Westchase. Abstracts are due by January 24th with the early discount registration deadline of January 30th.

• Almost all types and variations of filters are used in the oil and gas industry. The trend toward unconventional oil and gas recovery is resulting in filtration expenditures at least twice as high per barrel of oil or cubic ft of gas extracted. The reason is that unconventional recovery includes many complex processes not the least of which is fracking.

  
  Tightening of limitations on the quality of water discharges is also leading to more filtration opportunities. Zero liquid discharge systems are often required. This results in the use of membranes for final purification and dewatering devices such as filter presses.

  
  One of the largest filtration opportunities in the oil and gas industry is for coalescing filters. High efficiency media is required to remove coalesced droplets from gas. Another application is to remove water from the oil product or oil from the discharged water.

• Jerone Barillon is now with Keiler, a full service ad agency. He was formerly with Ahlstrom as Director of Marketing.  He weighed in on the topic of Oil & Gas, “The most important item for me seems to be the treatment of waste water from fracking operations. As fracking develops and public awareness about the process grows, more and more of the operators will be forced (by government regulation or self-regulation) to treat their water. The key for this to be adopted on a large scale is for the operators to get a benefit out of re-using the treated water. Although some companies are coming up with on-site solutions, there is still lot to do in this field. One of the major differences with more traditional filtration end-uses is that the end-users are not as well known to the filter media world. Accessing the right people at Halliburton, Schlumberger or Baker Hughes takes a dedicated marketing effort and different tactics than traditional media-to-filter-producer methods."
