FGD & DeNOx Insights
Lots of Analysis of FGD and DeNOx at EUEC and Then Thursday Hot Topic Hour
Next Thursday, McIlvaine will provide a review and highlights of the EUEC conference including both the speeches and exhibitor insights. The Utility MATS developments will be a prime topic. We will be asking questions such as whether lime or sodium is the best compound for HCl capture. Relative to mercury capture, how much efficiency improvement has there been in lime and activated carbon? Should you consider bromine compounds as your main route to meeting the mercury goals? What about natural oxidation and chemical fixation instead of gypsum? How about a scrubber/wet precip combo instead of a dry scrubber/baghouse? You can register at:

Big FGD Retrofit Market in the U.S.
The market for upgrades and replacement in U.S. FGD systems will be more than $800 million per year. This is the forecast appearing in the McIlvaine report, FGD Market and Strategies. (www.mcilvainecompany.com) There are more than 75,000 MW which are older than 20 years. Many of these units will require very substantial upgrades and replacement.

There are another 25,000 MW which are more than 10 years old but less than 20 years old out of a total of 165,000 MW which are more than 5 years old.

Finally, there are 65,000 MW of plants which are 5-10 years old. These units will require replacement of nozzles, damper parts, instrumentation and possibly even mist eliminators. Ninety units were installed with 2205 stainless steel shells in the 2000-2008 timeframe. Crevice corrosion had occurred in most of these units. New linings or even wall papering with super-austenitic steel is required.
Agitators, pumps, fans, compressors, mist eliminators, ball mills, belt filters and other components also need to be periodically replaced.
